CHILE ON TWO-MATCH LOSING RUN

Two-time South American champions Chile are on a two-match losing run after suffering defeat in each of their last two matches on the international football scene. The Chileans won’t be going to the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament mainly due to those two defeats. It must be pointed out that the defeats for the Chileans came in the final two qualifiers for the Qatar World Cup in the South American region.

Chile came into their final two World Cup qualifiers with the opportunity to secure qualification to the tournament on Qatari soil. Their qualification hopes took a massive hit when they were thrashed by hosts Brazil in the first of the two qualifiers. Brazil thumped Chile 4-0 at home with Paris Saint Germain (PSG) star Neymar getting one of the goals. Neymar scored the first goal of the game via a spot kick before Real Madrid attacker Vinicius Junior doubled the advantage almost immediately. The penalty goal from Neymar came with a minute left on the clock, while Vinicius added a second goal in the first minute of added time. The Brazilians extended their advantage in the second half through the goals from Aston Villa playmaker Philippe Coutinho (penalty) and Everton attacker Richarlison.

The Chileans went into the final round of qualifiers in the South American region ahead of Qatar with the odds to qualify against them. They had a slim hope of making it to Qatar before the loss at home to Uruguay ruled out their participation at the World Cup tournament later this year. Chile succumbed to a 2-0 loss to Uruguayans with Luis Suarez getting one of the goals. The ex-Liverpool attacker scored the first goal of the game between Chile and Uruguay on 79 minutes before Real Madrid star Federico Valverde wrapped up the win on the stroke of full time.

In South America, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador and Uruguay qualified for Qatar automatically, while Peru in fifth place will need the inter-confederation playoffs to get to Russia.
