The 53-year-old said that his team totally deserved the three points from this match. Chile came into the encounter against Uruguay having recently lost the World Cup qualifying match against Peru. As a result, there was a lot of pressure on Sampaoli to deliver a win in this match.

Things got off to a good start for Sampaoli after his team managed to take the lead just 10 min into the match through a goal from Esteban Paredes. Eduardo Vargas then scored in the second half to make the game safe for the home team.
Despite fielding the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, Uruguay were not able to break a stubborn defence from Chile. Sampaoli said after the match that it was extremely crucial to beat one of their direct rivals for the World Cup qualifying spots.

He said that the first goal was extremely crucial in the match as it gave them confidence to go on and snatch the second late in the match.

“My team were rewarded for playing a great match against a great opponent. Uruguay were a direct rival and a tough opponent of ours. The effort of my players was important in the context of our fight for qualification. We stopped Uruguay from becoming the protagonists. We grew in stature after the first goal went in, but we must learn to further enhance our team play. It will also be important to determine our final position [in the group]. We cannot squander any more points,” said the Chile manager.
