Chile manager Jorge Sampaoli is reportedly looking to quit the national team in order to take over as the manager of a top Brazilian club. His decision to leave Chile may come after the national team admitted corruption charges in a recent FIFA scandal. Chilean FA pleaded guilty to the United States on certain charges related to corruption. This scandal has hit the nation just a few months after their immense success at the Copa America 2015. His decision to leave Chile may come after the national team admitted corruption charges in a recent FIFA scandal. Chilean FA pleaded guilty to the United States on certain charges related to corruption. This scandal has hit the nation just a few months after their immense success at the Copa America 2015. Even though the 55-year-old is under contract until the 2018 World Cup, he has decided to leave the national team ahead of schedule.
In a recent interview, though, Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli has confirmed that he does not want to desert the national team at this stage and will continue his role. This comes a surprise especially considering that he has reportedly agreed a deal with Palmeiras. Chile have done exceedingly well under Sampaoli, who took over the national team back in 2012. Since then, they have made steady progress in terms of results and the development of young players. Many new players like Alexis Sanchez have progressed on an international level since Sampaoli took over.
After having served the national team for such a long period, Sampaoli will find his achievements questioned in the wake of the recent scandal. Many countries and high profile individuals in the game have recently been found guilty of corruption ranging from scheduling of major tournaments to individual results. During the 2014 World Cup, Chile managed to stun the world by almost winning the title. It took a lot of effort to knock them out at the last 16 stage of the competition. The country ended the long wait for a major trophy by winning the Copa America in front of their own supporters. They beat Argentina in the final.
