Marcelo Bielsa is regarded as one of the best managers when it comes to national teams. He has been able to get the Chilean national team to great heights under his regime. He is currently the manager of Spanish club Athletic Bilbao, whom he has been able to take to the Europa league and Copa del Ray final this season.
Claudio Borghi has said that most of the praise when the team are doing well goes to Marcelo Bielsa, while the negative criticism comes towards him. Claudio Borghi has been under pressure from the national media and the fans ever since overseeing a poor Copa America. He has also overseen the heavy defeat suffered at the hands of Uruguay and Argentina in the recent World Cup qualifying matches.
Chile will be taking on Venezuela at the Puerto La Cruz knowing that they can go top of the table with a victory. This would put them as the favourites to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
“People believe that all the good things in the team are down to him. And the bad things, down to me. We don’t have a Luis Suarez or a Fernando Torres but it’s all my fault. What stands out for me is that everyone talks about his work but no-one saw him work because he was very solitary. We are second in these qualifiers, with a better points total [after five games] than in the last three, but there are aspects of my personality that people don’t like. It would seem that the vast majority of people are not paying attention to the work we have done,” said Claudio Borghi.
