Sampaoli Happy With Chilean Results

Despite his team’s loss in a World Cup match against Netherlands by 2-0, the Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli didn’t have sadness on his face in the press conference yesterday and that was understandable.

Despite his team’s loss in a World Cup match against Netherlands by 2-0, the Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli didn’t have sadness on his face in the press conference yesterday and that was understandable.

The Chileans had already registered a berth in the Round of 16 with victories in the first two matches and thus, the Netherlands game was just a dead rubber for them. They would still have liked to win it though to keep the momentum going and for a large part of the match, they were in there fighting, but, towards the end, the Oranje found the net twice and made sure that it’s them who would end up topping the group.

The defeat didn’t affect Sampaoli at all. It was clear from the way he talked to the reporters at the end of the game. He was just proud that his team secured a win against the reigning champions Spain and reached the pre quarter finals.
Sampaoli, however, criticized his counterpart and one of the best managers in the world, Louis van Gaal, for being very defensive throughout the game.

The 54-year old said, “Our intention was to win and thus, we were trying to attack. The opposition, on the other hand, was focussing only on its defence. It’s hard to counter the teams which play in that manner.”

“I am glad that my boys played aggressive brand of football in all the group games. Yes, we couldn’t finish as well as we wanted today, but, we are making our way to the knockouts with our heads high.”

Chile has to face a very strong opponent in the round of 16. They will be up against the host nation Brazil on 28th of June at Estadio Mineirao, Belo Horizonte.
