The Chilean national football team has decided to part ways with the manager Claudio Borghi after a run of poor results, which has left the team struggling to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The team has lost the last five matches without exception including the friendly match against Serbia.
The national football Federation has wasted no time in parting ways with the manager, who has been unable to get the results. Chile have been extremely poor since the 2-0 win over Venezuela in a World Cup qualifying match back in June. Since then, they have suffered five consecutive defeats that has left them in a perilous position with regard to World Cup qualification.
Claudio Borghi has revealed that he has been aware of the fact that results have not been good enough in the last four matches and he has been asked to step down by the federation directors. He has said that he has already announced his resignation to the players. He replaced the current Atletic Bilbao manager Marcelo Bielsa back in February, but has been unable to match his compatriot’s achievements with the national team, which included taking them to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Only four teams qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and Chile are currently in the sixth position.
“The record isn’t good after the last four matches we have played and a few minutes ago I met a couple of the federation’s directors who asked me to step down. I have already announced the news to the players. They (the directors) asked me to go, I have been sacked and I have not resigned. This closes a really nice chapter in my life, and I am really proud to have been the coach of Chile,” said the former manager.
