Chile have recently appointed Jorge Sampaoli as the new manager of the national team. His work will be beginning with the matches against Haiti and Senegal. The manager has named up the squad that will be taking part in these friendly matches, and it is largely composed of the domestic based players.

It is not surprising given that Jorge Sampaoli has had very little time since taking over the job as the national team manager. Sampaoli comes on the back of a hugely successful spell as a club manager. He has managed to win three consecutive league titles along with the Copa Sudamericana in 2011.

The Argentine manager is known for his workaholic habits when it comes to being the manager of a club team. Even though the national team manager’s role is not as demanding, the coach has been heavily involved in travelling to see players capable of representing the national team. He has said that the team will not be playing with a short-term attitude in mind. This is because playing with the short-term attitude causes the long-term results to suffer. The arrival of Sampaoli could not have come at a better time because Chile have lost the last five matches without exception, while their chances of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup is also in tatters.

“The functioning of the team is more important to me than the result. If we play for the short term, we will not have good results in the long term,” said the new manager. “I think after the games in March, we will know if Chile will qualify. That’s what I think. I hope Chile can qualify, it’s a great passion here. He did a wonderful job in 2011 with Universidad de Chile and in the first half of 2012, but he wasn’t able to keep that momentum. We will have to see how he goes,” said the former ANFP President Harold.
